Here are some tips for Singaporeans to save money this festive season when sending or spending money internationally:

  • Check the fees and exchange rates. The exchange rate used by traditional providers is often not the favourable mid-market rate as seen on Google. Instead, a markup is often added to the rate, meaning people pay more than expected for international payments, resulting in a hidden fee that is not transparently disclosed. To avoid this, opt for a multi-currency provider like Wise that uses the mid-market exchange rate and charges a low, upfront conversion fee.
  • Pay in the local currency. When shopping internationally, make sure you’re paying in the local currency instead of paying in your home currency (SGD) to avoid dynamic currency conversion charges.
