Tokyo, JAPAN, 12 May 2026Wise, the global technology company building the best way to move and manage the world’s money, today brings Apple Pay to its Mastercard debit cardholders in Japan. Apple Pay is an easy, secure, and private way to pay in-store, in-app, and online.

Both Wise Account and Wise Business customers in Japan can now add their Wise cards to Apple Wallet and pay using Apple Pay on their Apple devices, and make fast, secure contactless transactions in-store, online, in-app, and on public transport – both locally and internationally, anywhere that Mastercard Contactless is accepted.

The launch addresses growing Japanese demand for convenience – according to Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, cashless payments reached 58% of total consumer payments in 2025. Wise data also shows that users are 1.5 times more likely to transact with their cards on mobile wallets compared to those using physical cards.

To pay in-store, customers simply double-click the side button, authenticate, and hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near a payment terminal to make a contactless payment. Every Apple Pay purchase is secure because it is authenticated with Face ID, Touch ID, Optic ID, or device passcode, as well as a one-time, unique dynamic security code. Apple Pay is accepted in grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants, coffee shops, retail stores, and many more places that accept contactless payments.

Customers can also use Apple Pay on iPhone, Mac, iPad, and Apple Vision Pro to make faster, more convenient purchases in apps or on the web without having to create accounts or repeatedly enter contact information, card details, or shipping and billing information.

More control, better security for customers in Japan

In addition to the physical card, customers can also add up to three digital cards from Wise to Apple Pay. Customers can freeze and unfreeze their Wise cards instantly at any time, track every transaction in real-time through the Wise app, and even assign different cards for different types of spending.

Security and privacy are at the core of Apple Pay. When customers use a credit or debit card with Apple Pay, the actual card numbers are not stored on the device, nor on Apple servers. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted, and securely stored in the Secure Element, an industry-standard, certified chip designed to store the payment information safely on the device.

Mika Sei, Country Manager, Wise Japan, said, "More and more customers in Japan want the ease and convenience of mobile contactless payments, and we’re excited to bring Apple Pay to our Mastercard debit cardholders in Japan. This has been one of the most requested features from our customers in Japan, and this launch integrates the easy, secure and private payment experience of Apple Pay with the Wise card, which enables payments in over 40 currencies at the mid-market exchange rate with no hidden fees. We’re pleased to work with Apple to provide our customers with the seamless experience of Apple Pay and the convenience and transparency that Wise is known for."
