Wise becomes the first non-bank to be granted full licence set in Thailand to bring multi-currency wallet features for people and businesses

Bangkok, Thailand, 17 March 2026 – Wise, the global technology company building the best way to move and manage the world’s money, has become the first non-bank and international company to be granted the full set of licences from the Bank of Thailand to bring the Wise account for people and businesses to Thailand.

This means that Thai citizens, businesses and foreign residents will have the country's first fully digital, foreign currency wallet for sending, receiving and spending money in multiple currencies all within one app. One account that works just as well as it does in Thailand or abroad.

Thailand is one of Southeast Asia’s most internationally connected economies, with strong tourism flows, overseas education, cross-border trade and a large community of people earning and spending across multiple countries. According to the World Bank, Thailand saw a total of $9.46 billion flow into the country from Thais and residents abroad in 2024, while $8.03 billion was sent out of the country - highlighting the scale of money moving across Thailand’s borders. Yet for all of that movement, the financial infrastructure hasn't kept up. Based on Thai transaction volumes and World Bank global average costs, consumers could potentially save over $1.04 billion annually in hidden fees by switching to Wise.

Sending money overseas through a Thai bank typically costs significantly more with hidden exchange rate markups layered on top of fixed transfer fees with little to no transparency about what customers are actually paying. Wise was built to fix exactly that.

Wise currently serves 15.6 million customers globally, and moved $185 billion in cross-border volume to more than 160 countries last year, all underpinned through the more than 75 licences it holds around the world. Customers saved $2.6 billion in hidden fees last year by using the mid-market exchange rate, and a transparent fee shown upfront.

Customers can join the Thailand waitlist today to be among the first to access the Wise account when it launches including getting early access to the following features:

  • Send money internationally from a Thai bank account to 70+ countries, in Thai baht, at the mid-market rate with no hidden fees
  • Receive money and get paid from abroad by sharing local account details from 10+ countries including a UK sort code, US routing number and European IBAN
  • Hold and convert between 40+ currencies in one account
  • Spend globally with the Wise card, accepted online and abroad in more than 160 countries
  • Scan and pay using QR codes at millions of merchants within Thailand

Kornveena (Veena) Chatchawalworapong, Country Manager for Wise Thailand, said: “In Thailand, it’s normal for people to have financial lives that stretch across borders - whether that’s parents supporting children studying overseas, small businesses paying suppliers abroad, or young professionals and freelancers working with international clients. However, there hasn’t been a single unified digital solution to serve all these needs in one place. Until now. International payments offered in the market are still too slow, too expensive and not transparent. That’s why launching Wise locally matters. We’re giving people in Thailand one simple account that works just as well for daily spending at home as it does for managing money internationally.”

SK Saraogi, APAC Head of Banking and Expansion at Wise, said: “Asia-Pacific is one of our fastest-growing regions and accounts for over 20% of Wise’s global revenue. Launching in Thailand is a key part of that growth story. We’re seeing strong demand across the region from customers who need a financial account that works seamlessly across borders. Being the first non-bank to secure these licences is an important milestone for us as it enables us to invest further in the infrastructure we’ve built for the last 15 years to support both local and international money movement.”
